POWERFUL CHRISTIAN

Holy Spirit, Baptism of the Holy Spirit

What Is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is one of the most transformative experiences available to every believer. It is typically the third part of the new believer’s journey. First you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Second you are baptized in water, where the old man dies and a new person emerges. Third the Holy Spirit comes upon you in baptism and ignites your spirit to fulfill everything God has created you to do. This is not just an emotional experience. It is a divine empowerment.

When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, He activates gifts and brings a power that goes beyond your natural ability. Jesus promised in John 14:12 that His followers would do greater works than He did, and that power flows through the baptism of the Holy Spirit. He heals the sick through you. He casts out demons through you. He speaks through you. He establishes things through you.

The Holy Spirit uses a surrendered believer to do the works of the Kingdom of God. You do not just become a new person in Christ. You become an empowered vessel of the living God.

Is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit Different From Water Baptism?

Yes, and understanding the difference between the two is essential for every believer. Water baptism is an outward declaration of your faith in Jesus Christ, but it is far more than a symbol. Even John the Baptist understood the significance of baptism. When Jesus came to be baptized, John tried to stop Him and said, “I need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” Matthew 3:14. Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Matthew 3:15. It represents the death of your old self and the emergence of a new person. When you go down into the water, the old man dies. When you come back up, a new spirit man is born. You are literally born again.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is God’s supernatural empowerment for believers. Through the Holy Spirit, ordinary people can be used by God in extraordinary ways—walking in His power, operating in spiritual gifts, boldly sharing the Gospel, and accomplishing things far beyond their natural abilities. Jesus promised that believers would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them. Through the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, God equips His people to advance His Kingdom, bring others under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and bring glory to His name.

Was Jesus Baptized?

Yes. When Jesus came to John at the Jordan River, John tried to stop Him and said, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus answered him in Matthew 3:15 and said, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” In other words, Jesus was saying this is the divine order and it must be done. And notice what happened the moment He came up out of the water. The Holy Spirit descended on Him like a dove and a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.” That was God confirming Jesus as the Messiah and showing every future believer that water baptism and the baptism of the Holy Spirit are connected, even though they are two distinct experiences.

Does God Really Want Believers to Be Baptized in Water?

Absolutely. The Bible shows us repeatedly how seriously God takes water baptism. In Acts 8, Philip was led by the Holy Spirit to a desert road where he encountered an Ethiopian eunuch, a powerful court official and treasurer for the Queen of Ethiopia, sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah. He did not understand what he was reading. Philip explained the scriptures to him and shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The moment the eunuch believed, he looked out and saw water and said, what is to prevent me from being baptized right now? They stopped the chariot immediately, went down into the water together, and Philip baptized him on the spot. That is how urgent and important water baptism is. This man did not wait for a Sunday service. He did not schedule it for a convenient time. He saw water and he acted.

Water Baptism and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit: What's the Difference?

Water baptism is where your spirit is reborn. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is where your spirit is ignited. When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, He activates gifts within you, empowers you, and sets you on fire for the purpose God has for your life. He brings a power that goes beyond your natural ability and equips you to fulfill the calling God has placed on you.

Jesus promised in John 14:12 that His followers would do greater works because He was going to the Father, and that supernatural power flows through the Holy Spirit. He heals the sick through surrendered believers. He casts out demons through them. He speaks through them. He establishes His will and advances His Kingdom through them. The Holy Spirit takes ordinary people and enables them to accomplish extraordinary things for the glory of God.

Through the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, you become an empowered vessel of the living God, equipped to walk in His power, operate in His gifts, boldly share your faith, and impact the world for His Kingdom. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit enables believers to experience supernatural abilities as God works through them to accomplish His purposes, bring people into the Kingdom under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and bring glory to God’s name. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, ordinary believers can be used by God in extraordinary ways to fulfill His will, expand His Kingdom, and make an eternal difference in the lives of others.

Power of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

What Are the Signs of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

When the Holy Spirit comes upon a believer, He distributes gifts according to God’s purpose for your life. 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 lists these gifts: wisdom, knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, casting out demons and evil spirits, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues. He also gives gifts of teaching, leadership, and mercy.

Two of the most remarkable expressions of speaking in tongues are speaking directly to God in a heavenly language, and speaking to others in a foreign language you may not even know you are speaking, while others around you understand it perfectly. That is God working through you.

Alongside the gifts, the Holy Spirit also produces fruit in your life. Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruit of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The gifts are what God does through you. The fruit is what God builds in you.

Receiving the Holy Spirit Baptism

Who Can Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

Anyone who is saved and has accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior can receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. That is the first and most important prerequisite. Typically, as Jesus Himself modeled in Matthew 3:16-17, water baptism precedes the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.  In the Bible, most people received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit after they were baptized in water. Are there cases of people having received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit before water baptism? Yes. However, that is not the typical order Biblically.

The consistent pattern throughout the New Testament was clear and repeated over and over again.

Accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and repent of your sins. Get baptized in water. Then receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

We see it with Jesus Himself. We see it with the disciples who waited ten days in Jerusalem after Jesus ascended before the Holy Spirit came upon them at Pentecost. We even see Paul going through communities asking believers, have you received the Holy Spirit?

Because many had been baptized in water but had never received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. In some cases Paul had to lay hands on them before they received it. Even Kenneth Hagin went to his pastor and said he wanted to receive the Holy Spirit, and his pastor had to lay hands on him.

There is one notable exception in Scripture. When Peter went to the house of Cornelius, a Roman centurion and the first Gentile to ever receive the Gospel, the Holy Spirit fell upon Cornelius and his household before they were baptized in water. This was not the normal order.

God did it deliberately to show Peter, who had doubt about taking the Gospel to Gentiles, that salvation was for everyone, not just the Jews. Peter himself was astonished. But even then, Peter immediately commanded them to be baptized in water afterward, because that step was still required.

Today the process remains the same. Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Be baptized in water. Ask God for the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

As Jesus said in John 3:5, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. And Acts 2:39 confirms the promise is for you, your children, and all who are far off, for as many as the Lord our God will call. If you belong to Christ, this gift belongs to you.

How Do You Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

Receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not complicated. It is a promise from God that He wants every believer to have. Jesus made this clear in Luke 11:13 when He said, “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” The answer is simple. You have to ask. God wants to give you the Holy Spirit more than you want to receive it.

Here is the step by step process the Bible shows us:

Step 1: Accept Jesus Christ as Your Lord and Savior You must be a born again believer before you can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. If you have not yet accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, that is your first step. Click here to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior

Step 2: Be Baptized in Water Water baptism is the next step. It is where the old man dies and the new person in Christ emerges. While there is at least one occasion in Scripture where the Holy Spirit came upon someone before water baptism, that was Cornelius, the first Gentile to receive the Gospel, and even he was baptized in water immediately afterward. Water baptism is what God expects and what Jesus modeled for us. If you are in a situation where water baptism through a pastor is not immediately possible, that is between you and God. He understands. But do not put it off. Baptism can happen in a church, in a river, or even in a bathtub. What matters is the act of obedience.

Step 3: Ask God for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit This is where many believers stop, and it is the step that changes everything. Luke 11:13 makes it clear that your heavenly Father will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. Acts 1:8 promises that you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. Acts 2:39 confirms that this promise is for you, your children, and all who are far off. Simply ask God with a sincere heart and He will answer.

You can pray this prayer right now:

Before You Pray: If you have already been baptized in water, simply pray this prayer. If you have not yet been baptized, pray this prayer and make a commitment to be baptized at the earliest opportunity as an act of obedience to Jesus Christ.

Keep In Mind: This prayer is for the Baptism and infilling of the Holy Spirit, the gift of empowerment Jesus promised in Acts 1:8.

Prayer to Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Heavenly Father,

I come to You in the name of Jesus Christ. I have accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, and I thank You for saving me. As You said in Romans 10:9-10, whoever confesses Jesus as Lord and believes in their heart that God raised Him from the dead will be saved. Thank You for the gift of salvation.

You said in 1 John 5:14-15 that this is the confidence we have in You: if we ask anything according to Your will, You hear us. And if we know that You hear us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions we have asked of You. Your Word also says that all the promises of God are “Yes” and “Amen” in Christ Jesus according to 2nd Corinthians 1:20. Jesus said in Luke 11:13 that You give the Holy Spirit to those who ask You. Therefore, I know that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is one of Your promises, and I thank You that You are faithful to fulfill every promise You have made.

Jesus, You said in Acts 1:8 that I would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon me. And in Acts 2:39, You declared that the promise of the Holy Spirit is for me and for all whom the Lord our God calls. I believe that promise belongs to me.

Therefore, based upon Your Word, I am asking You now for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. As You said in Numbers 23:19, You are not a man that You should lie. If You have spoken, will You not do it? If You have promised it, will You not bring it to pass? I know that You are faithful to fulfill Your promises.

Therefore, I stand on Your Word, believing and expecting that I will experience the Baptism of the Holy Spirit according to Your Word. I thank You that You have heard my prayer, and I trust You to fulfill what You have promised.

Holy Spirit, I welcome You. Fill me, guide me, teach me, empower me, and use me for the glory of Jesus Christ. Help me recognize and operate in the gifts You desire for my life and help me fulfill the purpose God has for me.

Father, thank You for hearing my prayer. Thank You for Your faithfulness, Your promises, and Your presence. Thank You for empowering me to serve You, advance Your Kingdom, bring others under the lordship of Jesus Christ, and bring glory to Your name.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Can You Be Filled With the Holy Spirit and Not Speak in Tongues?

Yes. Speaking in tongues is one gift of the Holy Spirit, but it is not the only gift and it is not given to every believer. The Holy Spirit distributes gifts according to your purpose, not according to a checklist. Even Kenneth Hagin, one of the most powerful men of God in modern history, acknowledged that he knew Spirit-filled believers who never spoke in tongues.

The Bible is clear on this. In 1 Corinthians 12:8-11, Paul lists different gifts being given to different people. To one is given wisdom. To another knowledge. To another faith. To another gifts of healing. To another miraculous powers. To another prophecy. To another distinguishing between spirits. To another speaking in tongues. To another interpretation of tongues. Then Paul makes it unmistakably clear in verse 11, “All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He distributes them to each one, just as He determines.” The Holy Spirit decides. Not you. Not your pastor. Not a denomination. The Holy Spirit determines what gifts you receive based on what God has called you to do.

Paul drives the point home even further in 1 Corinthians 12:29-30 when he asks, are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? The expected answer to every single one of those questions is no.

Some believers speak in tongues but cannot interpret. Some can interpret but do not speak in tongues. Some receive both. And some do not receive the gift of tongues at all because that is simply not the gift God has assigned to them.

The founder of Powerful Christian, Dr. Ye-Vetta Wilson-Worst, experienced this firsthand. At the time a pharmaceutical sales representative, she had visited her stepsister in the hospital who had suffered a stroke and been told by doctors that she was paralyzed from the neck down and would remain that way for the rest of her life. As Ye-Vetta was leaving the hospital, the Holy Spirit told her clearly to turn around and go back and pray for her sister’s healing. She had never experienced anything like this before, but she felt it was God speaking to her.

As soon as she turned around to go back, Satan came immediately. He told her nothing was going to happen, that she was going to embarrass herself, and that she should just leave. The Bible says in Mark 4:15 that Satan comes immediately to steal the word that God has spoken. But God spoke again and told her to go back and pray. She walked back into that room, asked her stepsister if she could pray for her, and her sister blinked her eyes yes. The Holy Spirit prayed through Ye-Vetta that day.

Three days later her stepsister walked out of that hospital. The doctors were astounded. Everyone who witnessed it called it a miracle. And it was. That was the power of the Holy Spirit working through a surrendered believer who had never spoken in tongues a day in her life.

Do not allow the enemy to use the absence of one gift to make you question the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life. The Holy Spirit confirms His presence through the gifts He does give you. And when Satan tries to make you doubt what God has already done, stand on 1 Corinthians 12:11 and remind the enemy that the Holy Spirit distributes gifts as He determines, and He has already determined yours.
